The learnership programme consists of knowledge, practical and work experience components. Learning takes place either at the college, through virtual classroom training or in-factory. TARGET AUDIENCE

This qualification is geared toward individuals within and or entering the clothing manufacturing sector. This qualification provides the learner with accessibility to be employed in manufacturing processes. The qualification reflects the needs of various community-based initiatives within the sector

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

This qualification is applicable to people within the clothing sector. This qualification will help prepare learners for employment and further education or training. The qualification will introduce the skills, knowledge and understanding needed by those considering a career in the clothing sector. This qualification will allow a learner to obtain a nationally recognised qualification in clothing manufacturing processes.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Whilst there is open access to the qualification, It is assumed that learners are already competent at Communication and Numeracy at ABET level 3 (equivalent to Standard 5 or Grade 7). This qualification may be achieved in part or in whole through the recognition of prior learning, which includes formal, informal and non-formal learning and work experience. Learners who have achieved a Grade 9 School Leaving Certificate with English and Mathematics (Mathematical Literacy) will be exempted from these fundamental learning modules through recognition of prior learning

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  6. Comply with quality procedures and practices when finishing and storing pressed and ironed items.
  7. Demonstrate an understanding of how to participate effectively in the workplace.
  8. Research market trends and determine customer needs and in so doing successfully negotiate price and delivery requirements with customers.
  9. Identify component parts of a product and in so doing calculate the quantities and cost of various component parts as per customer requirements.
  10. Determine the appropriate material requirements and in so doing identify a range of suppliers from which to select and buy materials.
  11. Complete a minimum of two different garments or home textiles using a lockstitch sewing machine and in so doing cut, sew, finish and inspect the completed garments.
  12. Demonstrate an understanding of Fundamental Communication as it pertains to language skills, processes, knowledge and practices
  13. Demonstrate an understanding of fundamental Mathematical Literacy as it pertains to a range of computational skills

TARGET AUDIENCE

This qualification is geared toward existing learners and new entrants withing the clothing manufacturing sector. This qualification allows the learner accessibility to be employed in a range of manufacturing processes, including pattern making, cutting, sewing and or finishing.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE

This qualification assumes learners have a General Education and Training Certificate at NQF level 1, or alternatively, an ABET level 4 qualification (equivalent of Grade 9 or Standard 7).

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

This qualification or part thereof, may be obtained through a process of Recognition of Prior Learning. Learners who have achieved a Grade 10 School Leaving Certificate with English and Mathematics (Mathematical Literacy) will be exempted from these fundamental learning modules through recognition of prior learning.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This qualification will equip the learner with the skills, knowledge and values to participate effectively in workplace activities within the Clothing Manufacturing Sector. This qualification will ensure that workers and new entrants will acquire relevant skills and knowledge required by a fast-changing sector essential for economic growth within the Clothing Manufacturing environment. This qualification will allow a learner to obtain a nationally recognised qualification in Clothing Manufacturing processes at NQF Level 2.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  3. Demonstrate an understanding of materials used and produced in Clothing Manufacturing processes
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the regulatory occupational safety, health and environmental practices

  6. Demonstrate an understanding of Fundamental Communication as it pertains to language skills, processes, knowledge and practices
  7. Demonstrate an understanding of fundamental Mathematical Literacy as it pertains to a range of computational skills
  8. Learners must demonstrate competence in one of the following areas of specialisation

ELECTIVE SPECIALISATIONS

1: Sewing Machine Operation
Demonstrate an ability to join component parts using a minimum of three sewing machine types and five operations

2: Finishing Department
Demonstrate an ability to press finished garments and ensure the despatch thereof, using pressing equipment, kimble guns, folding and bagging equipment, examining and checking processes, as well as sorting, picking and packing procedures

3: Cutting Department
Demonstrate an ability to perform manual processes in the cutting room, including laying-up, ply numbering (soabar), fusing and sorting and packing cut work.

4: Pattern Making
Demonstrate an ability to design and make patterns for sewn products, through amongst other drafting blocks and making basic patterns

TARGET AUDIENCE

Individuals entering the Clothing Manufacturing Sector and or Individuals involved in sewing machine repair and maintenance processes within a clothing manufacturing firm and or Individuals involved in operating sewing machines and who are wanting to grow their knowledge and skills base relative to repair and maintenance of machinery.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE

It is assumed that the learner is already competent in: Communication at NQF Level 2; Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.

This Qualification is open for everyone who is in possession of:

  • A minimum of Grade 10 or Engineering related National Certificate: Vocational, NQF Level 2
  • Have completed the National Certificate: Clothing, Textiles, Footwear and Leather Manufacturing Processes at NQF Level 2 or equivalent, specialising in SEWING processes
  • A minimum of one (1) year’s working experience in an industrial manufacturing environment, with a work focus on either electrical, mechanical or sewing processes

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

This qualification or part thereof, may be obtained through a process of Recognition of Prior Learning. Learners who have achieved a Grade 11 School Leaving Certificate with English and Mathematics (Mathematical Literacy) will be exempted from these fundamental learning modules through recognition of prior learning.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The qualification is applicable to people across the Clothing, Textile, Footwear and Leather sectors as the fundamental, core and elective components deal with knowledge, skills, values and attitudes required by all sewing machine mechanics in the sector. This qualification will assist in reducing high costs related to unnecessary machine and equipment maintenance and breakdown. Learners completing this qualification will deal with specific sewing machine maintenance and repair processes relative to specific sewing machine types.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  1. Maintain, service and repair a range of sewing machinery and equipment, including Lockstitch Sewing Machines and Overlock Sewing Machines
  2. Describe and identify raw materials, lubricants and chemicals commonly used in the Clothing sector.
  3. Use and maintain a range of hand or power tools applicable for sewing machines.
  4. Comply with quality and waste reduction practices.
  5. Demonstrate understanding of mechanical, pneumatic, electrical and electronic concepts.
  6. Demonstrate understanding of the importance of relationships and ensuring sound communications when interacting with various departments.
  7. Perform calculations relevant to different processes in the sewing environment.
  8. Demonstrate the ability to install sewing machine attachments, guides and folders
  9. Demonstrate an understanding of Fundamental Communication as it pertains to language skills, processes, knowledge and practices
  10. Demonstrate an understanding of fundamental Mathematical Literacy as it pertains to a range of computational skills

TARGET AUDIENCE

This qualification is designed to meet the needs of the learners who are already employed and involved in Wholesale, Distribution or Mail Order Retail within the Wholesale and Retail field. Additionally, it allows access to youth and unemployed adult learners who wish to pursue a career in these learning areas. This qualification provides learners with a grounding in all areas of distribution.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE

It is assumed that the learner is already competent in: Communication at NQF Level 1; Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

This qualification can be achieved wholly or in part through the Recognition of Prior Learning. The qualification may be granted to learners who have acquired the skills and knowledge without attending formal courses providing they can demonstrate competence in the outcomes of the individual unit standards as required by the fundamental, core and elective areas stipulated in the qualification and by the exit level outcomes.

An RPL process may also be used to credit learners with unit standards in which they have developed the necessary competency as a result of workplace and experiential learning.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The purpose of this qualification is to equip learners to understand and acquaint themselves with the underlying principles of all of the major areas related to distribution within the Wholesale & Retail sector, thus enabling them to become more effective employees. By assisting in the development of competence in the Wholesale and Retail field (arguably one of the bigger, more labour intensive and therefore important arenas for social and economic transformation in the country), this qualification will provide a stepping-stone for further learning in the Further Education and Training Band.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  1. Communicate both verbally and in writing: Reading, speaking and writing skills.
  2. Understand and apply mathematics: Basic computational and numeracy skills.
  3. Perform stock related functions: Count, move, pack, pick, label, and maintain stock.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This qualification is for utilisation by all members of the population. Anyone preparing to become employed, or self-employed, in any business whatsoever would be the persons most likely to be attracted to this qualification. In fact, many newly (or not-so-newly) appointed personnel, or struggling entrepreneurs, could benefit from this qualification or part thereof. The qualification is aimed particularly at entry level personnel, including those that operate their own business or are part-owners in a business. The GETC would also suit non-entrepreneurs as it offers all the grounding required for operating in the business environment in South Africa.

It is assumed that the learner is already competent in: Communication at ABET Level 3;  Mathematical Literacy at ABET Level 3.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

The structure of this unit standard based qualification makes the Recognition of Prior Learning possible. This Recognition of Prior Learning may allow for: Gaining of credits for unit standards in this qualification; Obtaining this qualification in whole or in part.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The GETC: Business Practice seeks to embed the six key literacies required by business organisations: Numeracy, Literacy, Entrepreneurial, Financial, Technological and Cognitive. It integrates the literacies into one qualification while also allowing each to be addressed separately in short courses and skills programmes, based on the constituent unit standards.

The fundamental component of the qualification enables learners to communicate and work with figures in a business environment, while the core component offers empowerment in the areas of technology, life orientation, human and social sciences (customer service), economics and management (entrepreneurship), as well as cognition theory and practice. It provides grounding in the key business essentials, while offering a range of elective choices which assist in preparing learners for the world of work. The learner successfully completing this qualification will have gained the knowledge and ability to:

  • Use fundamental skills in a business environment.
  • Make appropriate use of Information and Communications Technology in an office setting.
  • Incorporate a range of life skills in an employment or self-employment situation.
  • The learner will also develop some entrepreneurial and business knowledge coupled with correct business attitudes.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This qualification is intended for junior managers of small organisations, junior managers of business units in medium and large organisations, or those aspiring to these positions. Junior managers include team leaders, supervisors, foremen and section heads.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE

It is assumed that the learner is already competent in: Communication at NQF Level 3; Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3; Computer Literacy at NQF Level 3.

This Qualification is open for everyone who is in possession of:

Evidence can be presented in various ways, including international and/or previous local qualifications, products, reports, testimonials mentioning functions performed, work records, portfolios, videos of practice and performance records. All such evidence will be judged in accordance with the general principles of assessment and the requirements for integrated assessment.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The learners who achieve this qualification will be able to demonstrate competencies in management relating to Planning, Organising, Leading, Controlling and Ethics. Overall, this qualification will ensure that learners are capable of:

  • Developing plans to achieve defined objectives.
  • Organising resources in accordance with a developed plan.
  • Leading a team to work co-operatively to achieve objectives.
  • Monitoring performance to ensure compliance to a plan.
  • Making decisions based on a code of ethics

The qualification introduces key terms, rules, concepts, principles and practices of management that will enable learners to be informed managers in any occupation. The scope of management covers four domains: leadership, self-management, people management and management practices. It is intended to empower learners to acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes and values required to operate confidently as individuals in the South African community and to respond to the challenges of the economic environment and changing world of work.
