COURSE DESCRIPTION

This Short Course in Garment Costing will equip learners with the skills and knowledge required to identify component parts of a product and in so doing calculate the quantities and cost of various component parts as per customer requirements.

  1. Identify the components and materials required to make a garment.
  2. Calculate quantities of components and materials
  3. Cost the garment and calculate the selling price.

Modular based short course geared toward existing Sewing Machine Mechanics and or individuals involved in sewing machine repair and maintenance processes within a clothing manufacturing firm.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE

Learners will have attained an ABET Level 4 qualification or equivalent qualification at NQF Level 2 (Grade 10) or must have had at least 1 years working experience within an industrial sewing environment.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This Short Course will equip learners with the skills and knowledge required to clean and lubricate strip, assemble and set/tune a chainstitch sewing machine. Learners are also able to conduct running maintenance and to diagnose the sewing machine and to utilise garment construction skills in testing the machine

The relevant sewing machine will be selected from:

  • Single needle chainstitch machines or
  • Multi-needle chainstitch machines or
  • Cover-seam machines

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  1. Describe the method of operation and practical application of chainstitch sewing machines.

Learners are also able to conduct running maintenance and to diagnose a Lockstitch Sewing Machine and to utilise garment construction skills in testing the machine

The machine used will be selected from:

  • Single needle lockstitch machines or
  • Double needle lockstitch machines or
  • Zig zag lockstitch machines

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  1. Service the main stitch forming components of lockstitch sewing machines.
  2. Diagnose and rectify faults in lockstitch sewing machines.

It is implemented as an introduction for unemployed learners embarking on a Learnership Programme.

This technical Short Course focuses on Continuous Improvement Practices and Processes within a Clothing Manufacturing firm. The course focuses on bringing effect to improvements in efficiencies in two critical areas within a manufacturing plant, namely the improvement in quality standards and production targets.

Work-Study at Needlepoint

  1. Identify and assess areas of waste at needle point
  2. Assess Operational Methods for identified critical tasks and conduct method studies
  3. Conduct Capacity Studies and Time Studies to determine capacity & boost operator performance

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This Short Course is designed for existing Sewing Machine Operators. This Short Course focusses on equipping learners with the necessary practical skills required to ensure for a more versatile and flexible workforce operating in an assembly line of a Clothing Manufacturing firm. This Short Course will focus on the multiskilling and cross training of Sewing Machine Operators as identified and determined through the completion of a Skills Matrix. The aim of the Short Course is to develop Multi-skilled Operators who are able to perform different operations. This Short Course will monitor and assess individual learner performance relative to the operation and machine training undertaken.

This Short Course may be implemented in modular form based on the machine and operational requirements.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  1. Multi-skilling: Complete the Skills Matrix. Identify current skills sets. Identify and implement multi-skilling against a pre-determined set of operations required at plant level be it either simple operations or more complex operations
  2. Cross Training: Complete the Skills Matrix. Identify current machine skills. Identify and implement cross training against a pre-determined list of two sewing machine types
  3. Monitoring operator performance against set targets
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of quality standards and specifications

This Short Course is designed for Sewing Machine Operators working on the Assembly line of a Clothing Manufacturing firm. The Short Course will equip learners with an understanding of basic sewing machine repairs as they pertain to two sewing machine types, which would enable them to conduct fault finding and rectify common faults on the sewing machine. The aim of the Short Course is to reduce machine downtime as Operators would be better equipped to resolve basic mechanical problems.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  1. Describe the method of operation and practical application of overlock sewing machines.
  2. Diagnose and rectify faults in overlock sewing machines.
  3. Service the main stitching components of overlock sewing machines.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This Short Course is designed for Supervisors and Team Leaders working on an Assembly Line in a Clothing Manufacturing Plant. This Short Course will equip Supervisors and Team Leaders with basic mechanical adjustment skills and knowledge required to minimise machine downtime in a production environment. The aim of this Short Course is to ensure that Supervisors are better equipped to resolve basic mechanical problems.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  1. Conduct fault finding and rectify common faults on the Lockstitch Sewing Machine, Overlock Sewing Machine and Cover-Seam Sewing Machine
  2. Lockstitch Sewing Machine: Machine Parts, Threading, Needle insertion – change, Tension balancing and stitch setting, Setting of feeding and presser foot and attachments, Cleaning procedures

This Short Course, Work Study at Needle Point, is a practical intervention that is implemented at plant level focusing on the identification of factors impacting on efficiency in order to effect and bring about improvements to productivity.
