TAILOR-MADE SKILLS PROGRAMMES

TVET SA is accredited to offer credit-bearing skills development programmes linked to national qualifications. Our current menu of skills development programmes addresses skill gaps pertaining to specific technical skills applicable in the production areas of a manufacturing concern and/or critical skills such as quality assurance and control, productivity, and supervisory/team leader skills development, amongst others.

Skills development programmes are tailored to provide both knowledge and practical skills to participants, with an emphasis on workplace application.

SKILLS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES

TARGET AUDIENCE

Existing Sewing Machine Mechanics and or Individuals involved in sewing machine repair and maintenance processes within a clothing manufacturing firm.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE

Learners will have attained an ABET Level 4 qualification or equivalent qualification at NQF Level 2 (Grade 10) or must have had at least 1 years working experience within an industrial sewing environment.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This skills development programme is designed to meet the needs of learners who are involved in sewing machine repair and maintenance processes within the clothing sector, specifically Sewing Machine Mechanics as well as Sewing Machine Mechanic Assistants. This programme reflects the workplace-based needs within the sector. This Skills Programme provides the learner with accessibility to be employed in manufacturing support processes. This Skills Programme gives learners exposure to a set of elective competencies in respect of the maintenance and repair of the Lockstitch sewing machine, Overlock sewing machine and Cover-seam sewing machine.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamentals of Industrial Sewing Equipment
  2. Set up industrial sewing machines to meet product specifications
  3. Service, Repair and Maintain Lock-stitch machines
  4. Service, Repair and Maintain Overlock sewing machines
  5. Maintain and Repair Chain-Stitch Machines
  6. Install sewing machine attachments, guides and folders

TARGET AUDIENCE

Geared toward individuals working in the informal (& formal) sectors who are currently operating, or who wish to start their own garment making business.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE

It is assumed that learners are already competent at Communication and Numeracy at ABET level 3 (Grade 5).

This Skills Programme is designed specifically for learners working in the informal sector who are currently operating, or who wish to start, their own garment making business.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the National Qualifications Framework and plan and compile a Career Pathway
  2. Demonstrate an ability to write and present a simple Business Plan
  3. Perform a range of operations including preparation of patterns, preparation of cut fabric parts, assembling of cut parts using a domestic lockstitch sewing machine in order to make a minimum of two basic products
  4. Finish, press and examine completed products
  5. Demonstrate an ability to cost garments
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of customer requirements and the principles associated with selling of products
  7. Demonstrate an understanding of how to plan and manage personal finances

TARGET AUDIENCE

Pattern Makers, Sample Machinists and or Individuals involved in making up of patterns within a clothing manufacturing firm.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE

Learners are required to demonstrate fundamental competencies, specified below, at ABET Level 4 or NQF 1 (Grade 9).

LEARNERS MUST BE ABLE TO

  • Speak, read and write in English.
  • Do basic mathematic calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and the calculation of areas, volumes and quantities.

This Skills Programme is designed to meet the needs of Pattern Making Personnel, Sample Machinists, Sewing Machine Operators, Design Room Personnel. This Skills Training Programme will provide the learner with the necessary skills and knowledge to design and make patterns for sewn products. Learners will draft a minimum of four basic blocks covering the upper and lower body. The learner will complete at least four patterns. Learners completing this Skills Programme will also demonstrate an understanding of quality procedures and practices.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  1. Identify customer needs, complete product specifications and complete basic technical drawings
  2. Identify and use pattern making tools
  3. Demonstrate an ability to take body measurements and read basic size charts
  4. Draft basic blocks
  5. Make basic patterns
  6. Demonstrate an awareness of quality in manufacturing processes and products
  7. Describe quality assurance and quality control procedures in the workplace

TARGET AUDIENCE

Geared toward existing Sewing Machine Operators wanting to learn new operations and or machines, with a focus on understanding the importance of improving productivity efficiencies.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE

Learners are required to demonstrate fundamental competencies at ABET Level 4 or NQF 1 (Grade 9).

LEARNERS MUST BE ABLE TO

  • Speak, read and write in English.
  • Do basic mathematic calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division

This Skills Programme is geared toward existing Sewing Machine Operators who would like to accumulate credits toward a nationally recognised qualification. This Skills Programme will provide learners with the necessary skills and knowledge to utilise a range of sewing machines and perform a range of operations as determined through a Skills Matrix. Learners completing this Skills Programme will effectively undergo a cross training and multi-skilling intervention at plant level. This Skills Programme will also equip learners with the necessary knowledge required to demonstrate an understanding of productivity processes and practices.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  1. Demonstrate an ability to operate a minimum of three sewing machine types as determined through a Skills Matrix
  2. Demonstrate an ability to perform five operations as determined through a Skills Matrix
  3. Perform basic machine settings
  4. Apply safety standards when operating sewing machines
  5. Apply the correct method and time standards for joining component parts as determined by company standards
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of productivity requirements and targets as they pertain to inputs, outputs and resources in the workplace

TARGET AUDIENCE

Geared toward existing Sewing Machine Operators wanting to learn new operations and or machines, with a focus on understanding the importance of continuously improving quality standards.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE

Learners are required to demonstrate fundamental competencies at ABET Level 4 or NQF 1 (Grade 9).

LEARNERS MUST BE ABLE TO

  • Speak, read and write in English.
  • Do basic mathematic calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division

Learners are required to demonstrate fundamental competencies at ABET Level 4 or NQF 1 (Garde 9).

LEARNERS MUST BE ABLE TO

  • Speak, read and write in English.
  • Do basic mathematic calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division

This Skills Programme is geared toward existing operators working within the Finishing department, inclusive of Quality Examiners and Quality Control Personnel. This Skills Training Programme will provide the learner with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively finish, examine and dispatch garments.  This Skills Programme will also equip learners with the necessary knowledge required to demonstrate an understanding of quality procedures and practices.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  1. Demonstrate an ability to perform a range of pressing operations on finished garments
  2. Demonstrate an ability to examine, check, inspect and dispose of finished garments
  3. Perform a range of dispatching operations including kimbling, bagging, sorting, picking and packing according to specified method, quality and time standards
  4. Apply safety standards when operating finishing equipment and machinery
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of quality requirements, specifications and instructions
  6. Identify and analyse quality faults and take the appropriate corrective action in line with company standards

TARGET AUDIENCE

Varied target audience inclusive of Supervisors, Team Leaders, Set Leaders, Work-study personnel and related occupations.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This Skills Programme is geared toward Line Supervisors, Team Leaders, Set Leaders and Individuals who play a vital role in achieving in-company productivity and quality standards. The Skills Programme is designed to equip learners with the necessary skills and knowledge required to plan resource requirements, understand and apply the concept of Line Balancing, whilst ensuring for the application of basic lean manufacturing principles

This programme comprises both theory and practical components. 

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of supply and demand, and the concept: production
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of productivity requirements
  3. Comply with waste reduction practices
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of quality procedures and practices
  5. Explain and apply quality control procedures

TARGET AUDIENCE

Geared toward individuals working within the Cutting Department, with a focus on a range of manual processes performed within the cutting room.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE

Learners are required to demonstrate fundamental competencies at ABET Level 4 or NQF 1 (Garde 9).

LEARNERS MUST BE ABLE TO

  • Speak, read and write in English.
  • Do basic mathematic calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This Skills Programme is geared toward existing operational staff working within the Cutting department. This Skills Programme will provide the learner with the necessary skills and knowledge focussing on a range of processes within the cutting room inclusive of laying-up, fusing and soabaring.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  1. Identify key/primary raw materials used in the manufacturing process
  2. Identify the processed (end) product and its uses
  3. Describe the handling and storage of materials
  4. Prepare materials for cutting
  5. Perform operations on cut work
  6. Apply safety standards when operating machines, equipment and tools

TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Blended learning.

TARGET AUDIENCE

First Line Supervisors – Team Leaders – Set Leaders and Individuals earmarked for development within this occupational band.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Basic Computer Literacy Skills are essential since this is a digital course which is accessed via an online platform
  • Some relevant workplace experience in supervising and or leading people would be advantageous
  • Access to a laptop or computer would be preferable. Though where access to a laptop or computer is not possible, access to a smartphone device would be essential
  • Access to the internet – WiFi – data is critical
  • Reading and writing skills are vital. It is therefore assumed that learners should be competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3 (Grade 11)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This digital – online Team Leader Skills Programme is geared toward the development of First Line Supervisors and or Team Leaders, Set Leaders as well as individuals who are earmarked for development as Team Leaders. The Programme is designed to equip learners with a range of knowledge, skills, values and attitudes related to Planning, Organising, Leading and Controlling. The programme scope covers four key areas, namely Leadership, Self-Management, People Management and Management Practices.

The E-Learning course is aimed at developing the team leading skills of team leaders, supervisors, and junior management. Each unit standard comprises 4-5 modules, the content of which are presented to the programme participants through video clips, downloadable documents, multiple choice quizzes, and formative activities. 

Topics covered in the E-learning course include:

  • Prioritise time and work for self and team
  • Apply knowledge of self and team in order to develop a plan to enhance team performance 
  • Identify responsibilities of a team leader in ensuring that the organisational standards are met 
  • Motivate and Build a Team 
  • Describe and apply the management functions of an organisation

A summative assessment is conducted at the end of each unit standard during a compulsory contact session.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  1. Identify responsibilities of a team leader in ensuring that organisational standards are met
  2. Explain the importance of Motivating and Building a Team
  3. Prioritise time and work for self and team by creating, prioritising, implementing and maintaining personal and team task lists
  4. Describe and apply the management functions of planning, organising, leading, controlling, decision making and problem solving within an organization
  5. Use a variety of strategies to deal with workplace conflict & Apply knowledge of self and team in order to develop a plan to enhance team performance
